I paint to see. It is to enter a mysterious place of oneself and of what lives, a bath of the gaze, an unveiling.
As a child, I experienced that initial sense of wonder at seeing the unnoticed, the unpredictable, even the intangible take shape in my drawings: you let your hand move freely and suddenly, you see ! That magic. Also, I was already feeling the pain of existing, the sorrow of war, of perpetual violence and of the ignorance of men – how to live? Painting has allowed me to walk, to go into the question, until now. Now is no longer the will to represent something, the subject has been lost, the structure is collapsing; all that unfolds, to breathe, is the moving beauty of the unknown in seeing. Whether the gesture is initiated by a taste of light or by the contemplation of a space, in the now edgeless din of the planetary catastrophe or by listening to the adventurers of sound (musicians, poets) where the graphic dynamic takes shape and resonates, the aim is to allow, through movement and within the depths of the sedimentary layers of colour, the stupor, the wonder of the eye to emerge, to the root of the image, to the silence.
Painting is my heart. All my visual art practices have nourished it, still irrigate it, without any divisions : drawing, my loom, graphic design, which gave me a sense of composition, photography, the snapshot of the visual sensation that often becomes a layer of invisible writing in the painting, the cinematographic adventure of colorimetry, lighting, animation in aurélien réal's films, where the modelling of light and the colour palette are refined, the new exploration of encaustic and ceramics, two arts of fire in the sumptuous material of beeswax, where the almost transparent intensity of the pigment is revealed by successive castings, and the raw base of the earth, clay, where the ancestral gesture of engraving is rediscovered. Everything is for the moment when the light appears, arrives, in the very loss of the quest, from the silent depths of I don't know. I have always painted to the point of silence. Today it is a song, for those who are leaving, to find another tenderness in mourning, or simply to honour the emotion of the living – a song of silence.
